Pregnancy Test Using Your Blackberry Cell Phone

Someone sent me an email that explains how to check if someone is pregnant using a Blackberry phone . As I don't have a Blackberry, I can't test this, so I hope someone can make sense of the instructions that were forwarded to me:
Dial **18#, place that phone on that person’s stomach and then press send. Watch the screen of the phone.
If she is pregnant, your phone will display something like a pregnant woman’s image and also show how many weeks pregnant she is.
 1 month pregnant  = B + 1
 2 month’s pregnant = B + 2
 3 month’s pregnant = B + 3, etc

How to Borrow Ebooks from the Library to Your Kindle

You can both borrow and lend Kindle eBooks in your library. This includes borrowing books from your local public library, as well as lending books to your friends.

Loaning a book to a friend

You can loan Kindle books to anyone with an email address: even if they don't have a Kindle device, they can download a Kindle reading app for their computer, tablet, iPad or smartphone. When you loan one of your books to your friends, it'll be automatically returned to you as loans expire after 14 days automatically. Note that some publishers have disabled lending: you’ll see a notification on the book listing page whether lending is “enabled” or not.

1. In your library, click on the action button of your ebook you won't to loan and select "loan this title":

You'll then see the following popup:

Complete the form to begin the loan of the ebook to your friend. The ebook will be returned to your library within a fortnight if the book is read by the borrower before the deadline is up and returns it to you. While your book is lent out, you will not have access to it in your Kindle. The only catch is that you can only loan out a book once, because of Amazon's deal with the book publishers.

Borrowing a Kindle book from a Library

Library ebooks are becoming more popular, so you may need to place a hold on a book that you really want and wait to get notified when it's available. But the benefits are that you don't have to physically go to the library, and you won't incur overdue fines if you bring them back late. Here are the basic steps for borrowing an ebook from a library and reading it on your Kindle:

  1. Check your library's homepage to see if your library offers a digital lending service. Another way to check is to visit http://search.overdrive.com, the main company that administers Kindle ebook lending for libraries.
  2. If an ebook is available, look for a "Get for Kindle" option. Every library will have a different interface, but after you click on the Kindle loan button, you’ll be taken to the Amazon Public Library Loan page. Select “Deliver to” and select “Get library book”.
  3. Some book publishers will require you to first install OverDrive (http://www.overdrive.com/software/omc/). This will require a USB connection as Overdrive ebooks and audiobooks can't be transferred wirelessly.

If you finish the book before the expiration date, you may return it early via the Manage Your Kindle page. Like other digital items, Kindle books—including those you borrow—can be added to your “Favorites” by tapping and holding on their icon. This adds a shortcut to the book at the bottom of your Kindle’s home-screen , allowing quick access.

Using a Mini-USB Cable to Get Stuff onto Your Kindle

Using a Mini-USB Cable to Get Content onto Your Kindle

You can load files and documents onto your Kindle using a Mini-USB cable connected to your mac or pc. The small end of the cable connects to your Kindle, and the regular USB port connects to your mac or pc. A Kindle Fire connected via USB will appear as a removable disk. To move files from your computer to your Kindle, drag them from their folder on the computer onto the respective Kindle folder. To get any of your purchases, visit Amazon.com/myk and click on the ‘Action’ button next to any book. Select “Download & transfer via USB”, and you’ll then be presented with a list of devices you can download your digital purchase to. Any documents you send to your Kindle via email or USB are stored directly on the device and won’t be stored in Amazon’s Cloud.

Documents can also be emailed to your Kindle. Your Kindle has a Send-to-Kindle email address that is tied to your device. It’s usually “YourName@Kindle.com”, but check the “Manage Your Kindle” page at Amazon’s site, located at Amazon.com/myk. In the left sidebar, click the link “Manage Your Devices” list and you’ll see a list of Kindles associated with your account. This is where you’ll find their Send-to-Kindle email addresses. You can send documents to this address and they will automatically be downloaded onto your Docs library.

What is Whispernet?

When you purchase a Kindle party and never bought an early black-and-white E-ink Kindle, you could be curious about the term 'Whispernet' is sometimes mentioned on Amazon book listing pages. Whispernet was an impromptu cellular network Amazon pieced together to provide eBooks to early Kindle consumers. It was built to be economical so that it wouldn’t saddle Kindle customers with a monthly service charge. In those days, Wi-Fi wasn't as available as it is today, so Whispernet was needed to supply content to Kindle customers away from home. There is very little necessity for Whispernet these days since most homes and workplaces have Wi-Fi.

How the Kindle Fire Compares to E-ink Readers and Other Android Tablets

While a normal Kindle uses E-ink technology to display text, the Kindle Fire uses color pixels just like a normal computer screen. This makes the Kindle Fire tablet more desirable for media use and for reading full-color ebooks.

Amazon Kindle Fire Vs. the iPad and Android Tablets

The iPad is what many people consider first when it comes to tablet computers. But when compared with the Kindle Fire, the iPad has some real drawbacks.
  • Its substantial cost is the first issue that many people have with iPads. They are pricey and, although they have more bells and whistles than a Kindle Fire, lots of people do not think the additional features (a camera, for example) are worth the extra cost.
  • If you’re worried about processing power, you shouldn't be worried if you go with Amazon’s color tablet. The Kindle Fire is equipped with a dual-core processor giving it plenty of processing power.
  • Customers wanting an Android tablet might balk at the Kindle Fire, but don’t let the first looks fool you. The Kindle Fire features a default interface that makes it quite Amazon-centric, but you’ll soon discover ways to expand its horizon. In fact, your Amazon Kindle Fire can do anything that any unit running Android can do. If you have an Android phone, adapting to the Kindle Fire will be rather easy.
  • Many Android users are fond of Dropbox, which is available also on the Kindle Fire, but Amazon has something even better: 5 GB of free storage which it dubs its Amazon Cloud Drive. In addition to the 5 gb, purchases won’t count against your data total, so you can buy movies from Amazon on your PC and have it be available on your Cloud Drive, ready to pull down on your Kindle Fire.

Kindle Fire and Amazon Prime

When you have an Amazon prime account, it becomes something more than just a way to get free shipping when combined with the Kindle Fire. In addition to two-day free shipping on most items, you’ll get the following features when combining a Prime account with a Kindle Fire:

  1. Amazon Prime gives you access to a big library of free instant-streaming films and shows. It's like Netflix video streaming, although Amazon's video library isn't quite as big and has more selection in TV shows than movies. When you decide on not to renew your Prime membership, you'll still be in a position to buy films and TV shows from Amazon in the usual manner.
  2. Amazon Prime allows one Kindle book to be borrowed at no cost every month. These come from the Kindle Lending Library, which will be included in your Prime account. Not all books are contained in the Lending Library, but many popular books are. You’ll get one free rental a month, which could end up saving you $10-$20/month if you’re a heavy reader.
You'll obtain a free month of membership to Amazon Prime together with your Amazon Kindle Fire purchase.

Using the Carousel on the Amazon Kindle Fire

The home-screen in your Kindle Fire is the starting place for just about every thing you'll do with the Kindle, and features a carousel interface that allows user quick access to their latest content. Items are included within the carousel in chronological order. For instance, if you read a book during the day and a magazine later, the magazine will be located near the top of your carousel. It’s simple to navigate around the carousel by swiping your fingers in either direction - the items revolve in a merry-go-round fashion. Tap any item to open it. Changing the orientation of your Kindle Fire from portrait to landscape view means your items will automatically rotate accordingly. As you switch back and forth between 'portrait mode' and 'landscape mode, your Kindle Fire will automatically rearrange its display so that text and graphics appear right-side-up.
To navigate around in carousel view, tap on any menu item to get to the corresponding section. When you are browsing your library items (books, videos, music), you can switch between using a list viewpoint and a grid view. The grid view presents you with thumbnail images of the handles of your books and publications, whereas the list view reveals smaller thumbnails but more written description.
The Newsstand of your Kindle Fire serves up your magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

If you would not have any subscriptions yet, you may pick the 'Store' button on the top of the Newsstand interface to visit the Amazon store. When you purchase a magazine, it will automatically download to your Kindle and your Kindle will store the latest seven issues. (If you have a magazine that you’d like to remain on your Kindle following the default storage period, tap and hold the magazine's cover in your library and tick 'Keep' from the popup menu. This will make certain that it is not automatically erased from your Kindle. After you have collected back issues of more than one publication, issues will be grouped by title, enabling you to easily browse your library of this particular publication. Along the top of your Kindle screen, just below the search bar, you'll find a menu with links to your Newsstand as well as other popular destinations:

Publications library:.The Books section of your library contains every one of the eBooks you have purchased from Amazon. Once you register your device, the titles and thumbnails are downloaded. The text of your various ebooks is not saved to your Kindle until you actually open the document.

Amazon Kindle Newsstand Newspapers: these can also be reached from the Newsstand menu. You can subscribe to new newspapers by choosing the 'Store' button, just like magazines.
Magazines and newspapers are displayed using either 'Text' or 'Page' views: Text view gives you the text, while Page view shows the magazine's original layout, including illustrations. Page view aims to stay faithful to the magazine in the same way it is rendered on paper. Note that some magazines and newspapers do not can be found in the regular Newsstand format, but are instead provided as apps. If you want to acquire one of those, you have to buy the subscription in the Apps store and down load the app to see the periodical.

Save Battery Life on Your Kindle Fire

People used to the original E-Ink Kindle (which lasts for over a month on a single charge) may be shocked to find out that the Kindle Fire has an only about eight hours of battery life. This is because of the backlight in the Kindle Fire display and its in-plane switching technology requires significantly more power than the original Kindle and its E-Ink display. With that in mind, here’s some battery power savings suggestions for your Kindle Fire.

Use the Sleep Mode

The primary battery is used whenever the Kindle is turned on. By setting the Kindle Fire to 'Sleep Mode,' the Kindle will time out after a period of inactivity. This is especially important if you like to browse the Internet or watch videos. Sleep mode can help extend the battery to last for many of days. Sleep Mode is activated by pressing and releasing the 'Power' button at the bottom of the Kindle. You can assign the number of minutes of inactivity before your Kindle Fire automatically goes into sleep mode, anywhere from '30 seconds' to '1 Hour'. Another option to auto-sleeping the screen is to set your Kindle Fire to auto-lock after using. By locking the Kindle Fire, it will go into a 'sleep' mode thus conserving energy and extending your battery life. To change the lock settings, tap the settings bar at the top of the display and choose the ‘More’ option. Then select 'Security' and establish a password for your lock screen.

Turn Off Wi-Fi Whenever you are not using Wi-Fi

You can turn Wi-Fi 'On' and 'Off' as needed. If you’re on the Internet or interacting with Amazon’s Cloud, then you won’t be able to turn off Wi-Fi to preserve your Kindle’s battery power. If you don’t need the Internet, then you can turn off the Wi-Fi by tapping the settings bar at the top of the Kindle Fire and choosing 'Wi-Fi'.

Use Your Headphones Instead Of Speakers

Do not use the built-in speakers on your Kindle Fire. Use earphones instead.

Manage Your Kindle Screen Brightness

You can also optimize the Kindle Fire's battery life by lowering the brightness of your Kindle’s screen by dimming the screen so it’s not as bright. As far as reading books and novels, it's generally preferable to read on a darker screen. You can lower the brightness of the screen by tapping the settings bar at top of the screen or via the Display screen. Slide the bar to dim or brighten to your personal taste.

Charging Your Kindle Battery

Lithium Ion rechargeable batteries, like the one found in the Kindle Fire (and used in many other tablets like the iPad), shouldn't be continuously charged. For optimal battery life on your Kindle, only charge the battery when the power gets low. Other wise your Kindle battery will develop a memory effect and not last as long. To prolong your battery’s life, you should completely drain the battery once a month, then charge it back to its full capacity.

Give the Boot to Battery Hungry Apps (including your e-mail app)

There are many greedy apps or a battery-starving app may be sucking your battery dry. Use the free app “Badass Battery Monitor” (available on the Amazon App store) to keep an eye on what apps are draining. Also note that the Kindle Fire’s e-mail app will check for new messages significantly reduce power use. Tap the e-mail app icon, go to the menu to tweak your settings. Set it to ‘manual’: although you will need to refresh your inbox manually, you’ll save battery life.

Color Kindle DX in Late 2012 According to Sources

DigiTimes is reporting that Amazon will introduce a color e-book reader in the second half of 2012 and will include multi-touch capacitive touch panels instead of infrared touch panels used in the previous black and white e-book readers. Hanvon already has an ebook reader with a color e-Ink Triton display, but it's seriously lacking in functionality when compared to the Kindle.

This will be a huge advancement for ebooks since it will then be practical to actually read ebooks with charts, pictures, diagrams and all sorts of full color information. A color Kindle DX would be the optimal size for students wanting to read textbooks on their Kindle (at 9.7") and older adults who value the larger screen size.

The color e- ink screen will enhance the visual presentation of magazines and children's books on the DX.

If Amazon already has the color Kindle Fire, why release a color e-ink model ?

The advantage would be that the new color e-ink model would not have a backlit screen, as opposed to the Kindle Fire. Many people have difficulty reading on a backlit screen. Especially if you work on computers all day or wear glasses, we think you'll find that e-Ink feels less stressful on your eyes compared to the LCD screen of a backlit device (like a laptop, lcd monitor or smartphone). Here are some additional benefits that a color Kindle DX would have:
  • Textbooks that contain any kind of color diagrams don't work well on the color Kindle.
  • Kids are more interested in color on the pages when reading stories, and while kids may lose interest reading on a black and white DX (and currently prefer either the Kindle Fire or the iPad) they would be able to continue using the color Kindle DX and have it hold their attention.
  • It would also be great to shop the Kindle Store directly from the device with the muted color screen making it easier and more enjoyable to flip through the catalog.
